CONSTRUCTION WASTE

Green Skip Bin — Skip Bin Hire Northern Rivers

Throughout Australia, up to 40% of our waste is made up of construction and demolition materials—that's almost 19 million tonnes each year, and at least half of that is sent to landfills. With the new changes in recycling, there is now a higher demand for construction companies and councils to be more environmentally conscious about waste.

At Hasti Skips, we are committed to increasing the amount of construction and builders waste sent to resource recovery facilities to be made into reusable materials. Through our skip bins, we collect:

  • Concrete (unreinforced & reinforced)
  • Discarded or broken bricks
  • Asphalt
  • Timber
  • Tiles
  • Plasterboard
  • Cardboard
  • Paper
  • Other demolition materials

Once our team deliver your construction and builders waste to the resource recovery facility, it will then be mechanically and manually sorted. Ferrous and non-ferrous metals, bricks, concrete and non-recyclables are removed from the dry or combustible waste stream to be reused, while the rest is screened and shredded into process-engineered fuel (PEF). This alternative fuel can be then transported by the facility to be used as substitute in the making of cement.

COMMERCIAL & RESIDENTIAL WASTE

Landfill — Skip Bin Hire Northern Rivers

With stricter regulations now in place for recycling, we aim to maximise as much of the waste as possible being sent to resource recovery facilities. However, our skip bin hire provides an effective solution to treating and disposing of waste that may not be suitable for recovery.

We'll provide a full assessment of your waste removal requirements to determine the right skip bin size and how often you want it collected. All of our management team have also been trained to complete a full safety and risk analysis of your site before we start your waste collection service.

While we do collect most general waste, we cannot accept skip bin collections with:

  • Large heavy objects
  • Regulated waste
  • Tyres
  • Liquid waste
  • Asbestos
  • Drums
  • Hot or smouldering waste
  • Containers
  • Hazardous waste

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Q. Why have recycling rules changed?

    A. In January 2018, China—the largest importer of Australia's recyclable materials—enforced tougher restrictions under their National Sword Policy with a strict contamination level of 0.5%. Previously, China would accept recyclables with a 5% contamination level (incorrect items not meant for recycling).

This means that certain items, such as takeaway coffee cups and lids, small plastic items and soft plastics are no longer being accepted as recyclable materials due to the level of contamination in the items. The NSW Government and EPA are currently working together with local councils to help improve the recycling industry. With more materials being recycled in Australia, our team at Hasti Skips are committed to helping better the environment and our community with our resource recovery services, ensuring items are being reused wherever they can.

  • Q. What can I recycle?

    A. In the Northern Rivers region, the campaign #RecycleRight has been introduced to help locals make changes in how they recycle through 6 easy steps:

    1. Keep it simple—only recycle items made of plastic containers, glass bottles & jars, paper, cardboard, steel and aluminium.
    2. Keep out soft plastics—this includes plastic bags, soft plastic packaging, cling wrap, pasta packets, bread bags, biscuit trays, etc. These can be taken to either Redcycle collection points or placed in the red landfill bin.
    3. Keep out small items—anything smaller than a credit card, such as bottle lids, bread tags & straws must be placed in the red landfill bin.
    4. Keep it safe—leave out strapping, hoses, netting, wires, cords, clothing, building materials, cables, chemicals or other hazardous materials that may harm workers or damage machines at the materials recovery facility.
    5. Keep it clean—rinse or wipe out food or drink contaminants from containers. Also leave out any other contaminants, such as food scraps, nappies, dirty paper & cardboard, meat & biscuit trays, coffee cups & lids, clothing, fabrics, soft plastics & polystyrene.
    6. Keep it loose—avoid bagging or boxing recyclable materials & place them loosely in the bin. This helps workers at the materials recovery facility sort through recyclables faster.
  • Q. How does resource recovery work?

    A. The aim of resource recovery is to remove recyclable materials and sort them in different waste streams to be reused into new products. Each year, more than 22,000 tonnes of materials are being diverted from landfills and processed at the Lismore Recycling & Recovery Centre. Before the waste can be made into a recycled product, it must go through the following:

    1. Waste arrives at the materials recovery facility and is loaded onto a conveyor.
    2. Any bulky or non-recyclable materials are pre-sorted and removed from the waste stream.
    3. Glass, 3D objects (containers) and 2D objects (paper and cardboard) are separated after shape selection screening.
    4. Glass is processed by size and sent to recyclers or road builders.
    5. Paper and cardboard are sorted into high-quality valuable streams for processing
    6. Aluminium is extracted by an eddy current (localised electrical current induced in a conductor by a changing magnetic field).
    7. High-quality plastic streams (HDPE, PET & PPE) are sorted and returned back into the market.
    8. Steel materials are captured by electromagnets
    9. The processed and sorted material streams are then bundled into bails and transported out of the facility.
  • Q. What happens to construction waste?

    A. To meet the increasing demand for environmentally sustainable plans by both construction companies and local councils, leftover building materials and construction waste are now being recovered, sorted, processed and recycled. This allows industries access to economically viable and alternate materials for building and construction projects.

Through our parent business, Richmond Waste, we can collect materials such as discarded or broken bricks, tiles, concrete, timber, plasterboard and metal in our skip bins and deliver them to construction and demolition waste transfer stations throughout the Northern Rivers.

  • Q. Are there regulations on what can be put in a skip bin?

    A. Yes. This may vary in different councils, but it is illegal to dispose of:

    • Human or animal waste
    • Hazardous liquids, including oil, paint, poisons & pesticides
    • Batteries
    • Asbestos
    • Tyres
  • Q.What can you put in a skip bin?

    A. You can put green waste, general waste and electronics. Hazardous waste and liquids can also be added we just need to be notified.

  • Q. How long can I have the skip?

    A. Up to 3 weeks. Longer can be arranged, we just need to be notified.

We will also not accept large heavy objects, regulated waste, drums, hot or smouldering waste in our skip bins. If you need advice on how to correctly and safely dispose of these materials, speak to our team today.
